Here is an antique silver plated julep strainers marked “1847 Rogers Bros. A1”. It is approximately 5 and 7/8 inches long and the bowl 2 and 3/4 wide.
The pattern is a classic “back tipped” design with a star cut out.
This strainer, with the open star in the handle, was featured in the 1886-87 Meriden Britannia Catalog and was called the “Star Julep Strainer” in that catalog. That page is the background for my photo.
Harry Johnson, in his 1888 book, “The New and Improved Illustrated Bartender’s Manual” states that the strainer should be placed in the drink and served (you can read more about this in my blog post mentioned below).
