Here are two spoons marked “E.P.N.S. England” with a clover symbol (which is the mark for Barker Brothers of Birmingham, England) on the back of the handle. E.P.N.S. stands for electro plated nickle silver. They measure approximately 5 and 1/4 inches in length. The bowls of the spoons have bent, blunt or flat tips to be used as muddlers. They have a back tipped pattern which is known as “Old English” in England.
There have been many versions of the “Old Fashioned” cocktail over the years. It originated as what was called a “Whisky Cocktail” which was basically a small lump of sugar, a couple dashes of bitters, whisky and perhaps a little water. That was it. But over the years, inventive individuals added other ingredients such as fruit, including cherries and orange. There were those who still wanted the “old fashioned” whisky cocktail, however, and that name stuck…the “Old Fashioned” cocktail.
Many of the early “Old Fashioned” cocktail recipes call for the drink to be served “with a spoon”. This must have been to stir and dissolve any of that remaining sugar at the bottom of the glass.
Muddling spoons can also be used for more mundane tasks such as crushing pills or spices.
