Here is an antique silver plated julep strainer and bar spoon both marked “Derby Silver Co.” The strainer measures just over 5 and 1/2 inches in length and the bowl measures approximately 2 and 3/4ths inches wide. It has a star cut-out on the handle.
The twisted handle bar spoon measures 5 and 7/16ths inches long. It is in the Medallion pattern which features a warrior.
Both the julep strainer and Medallion bar spoon were included in Derby Silver Co.’s 1883 catalog.
Of particular interest is the placement of the Derby mark inside the bowl. That placement of the mark indicates that this was considered the back of the strainer and supports the placement of the strainer, bowl side down, in the drink when being served (indicated by Harry Johnson in his 1888 book, “The New and Improved Illustrated Bartender’s Manual”).
