1877 Niagara

For sale is an antique silver plated julep strainer that is marked “1877 Niagara Falls Silver Co.” which is a hallmark of Oneida. This strainer measures 6 and 1/2 inches in length and the bowl measures approximately 2 and 7/8ths inches wide.

There is an acorn figure cutout on the handle. The acorn was used as a logo by I. W. Harper Whiskey (Bernheim Distilling, Louisville, KY) and it is possible that this strainer is associated with them. I also have a toddy strainer for sale marked “Old Harper Whisky” and that, too, has another Oneida backstamp.

To read more about Old Harper please see this blog post: http://queenofsienna.wordpress.com/2014/02/23/the-old-harper-whisky-toddy-strainer/

Also, please see my blog post “The Victorian Bar” to read more about cocktail strainers in general:

This strainer has been well used over the years. I haven’t attempted to polish it as I think it’s beautiful as is…a well used antique cocktail strainer that has darkened with age. It has considerable plate loss and the underlying brass is showing through.
